Having a website built: the complete checklist

From first idea to going live. With this checklist you know exactly what to arrange, what to supply and which pitfalls to skip.

Step 1: define your goal and audience

The most important question is not what your site should look like, but what it should deliver. More quote requests? Phone calls? Online sales? Write it down in one sentence, then think about who your customer is and what they are looking for.

Step 2: gather your content

In practice this is the biggest delay in any website project. Get these ready:

  • Your logoPreferably as a separate file (PNG or SVG). No logo? It can be part of the project.
  • Photos of your work, business or teamReal photos convince more than stock images. Phone quality is often good enough.
  • Your story in keywordsWhat you do, for whom, what makes you different. Texts do not have to be finished; your builder helps.
  • Practical detailsAddress, phone number, email, opening hours and customer reviews.

Step 3: arrange your domain name

Keep it short, recognisable and without hyphens if possible. Already have a domain? Make sure you know where it is registered and that you can access it. A domain costs around 10 to 20 euro per year; hosting comes separately. Ask your builder to handle it for you.

Step 4: choose your pages

For most businesses this is the strongest base: a homepage that tells at a glance what you do, a page per service (good for findability), an about page with your face and story, and a contact page with a form and phone number. Five strong pages beat fifteen half-finished ones.

Step 5: think about findability from day one

SEO is not a layer you add afterwards. Have your builder take care of fast loading times, logical page titles, copy with the words your customers search for, and a correct technical base from the start. Also read our guide what does a website cost.

Step 6: going live and after

After launch it really starts. Arrange three things right away: a Google Business Profile (free and essential locally), Google Search Console so you see how you are found, and an agreement about maintenance. We facilitate hosting and maintenance for a fixed annual fee.

The biggest pitfall? Having a website built and never looking at it again. A site that brings in customers gets updated now and then and grows with your business.
